WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?

FAQ’s

01

What is meant by chain of custody?

This is the procedure which is followed after a ‘positive’ non-negative drug test. The urine sample is divided into 2 containers A and B and sent off to an accredited laboratory for testing to see if the ‘positive’ non-negative drug test matches the result of the instant drug test. The result will be communicated to your employer, usually in 5 working days.

02

What drugs are tested for?

We conduct either 6-part drug screening, 10-part drug screening or specific drugs on request. The most common drugs tested are Cocaine, Amphetamines, Methamphetamine, THC (cannabis), Opioids, and Benzodiazepines.

03

Can I eat and drink before my D&A test?

Yes. Please ensure that you can provide a urine sample when requested, by being hydrated. Certain foods e.g. poppy seeds can give a false positive result and should be avoided 3 days before your test.

04

What happens if I am unable to pass a urine sample?

You will not be allowed to leave the practice. You will be given 250mls/max 1 litre of water to drink every 30 minutes up to 3 hours. If after this time you are unable to provide a urine sample, you will be declared as having a non-negative result and your employer will be informed.

05

How do you test for drugs and alcohol?

A drug test is conducted using a fresh urine sample provided under strict conditions at the practice. An instant drug kit is used to test your sample. If a ‘non-negative result’ is obtained we will check with your employer to see if it is to be sent to the laboratory for Chain of Custody testing – see below. An alcohol test is conducted using a breathalyzer which provides an instant result. If the result is > 0.01 we will retest again in 20 minutes.

06

How quickly will the report come back from the lab?

Chain of custody results usually takes a minimum of 5 working days.
